TOPIC ONE–Compare and/or Contrast “Facing It” by Yusef Komunyakaa and “Dulce et Decorum Est” by Wilfred Owen . Although Komunyakaa writes about the Vietnam War and Owen writes of World War I, both poets focus on the experiences of the ordinary soldier. Discuss how these two poets explore the subject of war through their use of various elements of poetry (speaker, situation, diction, tone, imagery, metaphor, sound, symbol, allusion, or any other element you deem relevant). Do they use similar techniques? If so, what accounts for the similarities? Do they use different techniques? What accounts for the differences?

REQUIREMENTS

THESIS STATEMENT–The essay must include a thesis statement that clearly presents your OPINION about the poems being compared. It isn’t enough to say they are similar or different. You have to make a POINT about the poems and that point should be an original opinion or insight on your part. That point should be arguable. This means that it has to be supported with evidence.

SUPPORTING EVIDENCE– The essay must bring in relevant quotations from the poems to support your key points. You cite poetry by line number in parenthesis. To indicate a line break use a slash (/).

EXAMPLE:

Theodore Roethke begins his poem “My Papa’s Waltz” with the lines “The whiskey on your breath/Could make a small boy dizzy (1-2).

When citing long sections of poetry (four lines of verse or more), keep formatting as close to the original as possible.

EXAMPLE:

In his poem “My Papa’s Waltz,” Theodore Roethke explores his childhood with his father:

The whiskey on your breath

Could make a small boy dizzy;

But I hung on like death:

Such waltzing was not easy. (1-4)

PAGE REQUIREMENT–The essay must be 3-5 pages. The minimum is 3 COMPLETE pages. Essays not meeting the minimum requirement will receive a failing score. (You must also follow the MLA formatting requirements below. Therefore, do not use larger than allowed fonts or margins, or other formatting means, to fill up 3 pages; doing so will similarly result in a failing score.) Going over 5 pages is allowed.
