Instructions

In this full draft assignment, you will complete a draft using the Toulmin process. You will submit a full Toulmin outline of your speech argument. To do this, complete the following steps in your submission.

  1. First, state your basic claim: this is your core argument.
  2. List the core sources you are using as your data. List these by setting up data categories to highlight the significance of your collected data. Remember, if you are following the 5-point essay format you should have three of these data categories. Be sure to explain here how your data and scholarly research supports your claim and warrant.
  3. Then, write your warrant statement by discussing the claim in more detail, making direct reference to the data categories and sub-claims. The warrant statement should be a paragraph that maps out the argument structure you are using to support your claim.
  4. List your key backing points by illustrating all the primary sources and at least two scholarly sources you are using to further ground and back/justify your claim.
  5. Set up your rebuttal arguments, the act of addressing potential counterarguments. What are the main counter-claims that someone arguing from a different perspective might use to undermine your argument? Address these possible arguments in this step.
  6. Qualify your rebuttal to their possible counter-arguments. Here you will outline how your scholarly and primary sources “disqualify” the counterargument and support/validate your claim, warrant, and rebuttal statements. Be sure to explain how the sources you use here support your claim over the counter-argument. Note you may need additional scholarly backing at this stage, beyond what you originally found to support your claim and warrant. Look for new findings that may surprise and motivate the audience.

The final version of your speech essay/outline submission due with the speech assignment will contain all of this information, either outlined as above or with any editing you need for the speech format you choose to follow.
