The Shawl By Cynthia Ozick: I want you to read the text well and make an assertion about the text. In other words, what about the short story do you find intriguing? You should note the setting of the story and how the setting influences what you will discuss. What aspect of the story do you feel will benefit from a close analysis? Some writers concentrate on the shawl. There is certainly an analysis that can be made as to how the shawl operates in the story. Is the shawl used as a symbol? Other writers consider the characters in the story and what they feel is significant about them. Your analysis could focus on the actions/characterization of Rosa, Stella, or Magda. How do you feel about anyone of these characters? Indeed, Stella makes a choice to “take” Magda’s shawl. How can Stella’s actions be judged? Does the setting of the story affect how the reader might view Stella’s choice?

These are just a couple of examples of the way in which you can direct your analysis. Make sure that you make a claim, provide examples, explain how your claim and examples work together, and finish with a conclusion that makes it clear why your analysis is significant.
