Instructions
For this film review, you will have the opportunity to write about a film of your own choice. However, it must be a film that relates to one of the following topics: WWII, the interwar period between WWI and WWII, the Cold War, European colonization in the 20th century, or decolonization.
For your review, you should:
1) First write a short overview of the historical topic covered in your film.
2) then choose two characters from the film and discuss the ways in which the film represents them. If they are actual historical figures, discuss whether or not the film gives an accurate depiction of them. If they are fictional characters in a historical time, discuss the ways in which the film depicts them as representatives of a particular group – gender, race, ethnicity, nationality, social class, etc. Again, evaluate the accuracy of the film’s depiction. What are the film’s biases? On the other hand, in what ways does the film’s representations of real or fictitious characters in history allow us to see a side of history that is otherwise inaccessible to us through history books and mainstream historical narratives?
Each character should be written about separately.
