Essay 2: Single Source Essay – Rhetorical Analysis [15% of final grade]
Rhetoric is defined as the art of effective or persuasive speaking or writing, especially the use of figures
of speech, metaphors, analogy, and other compositional techniques. In terms of rhetorical appeals,
how does an author use ethos (credibility), logos (logic), or pathos (emotion) to convey his/her message?
The analysis is the process of breaking a complex topic or substance into smaller parts to gain a better
understanding of it. An analysis is not a summary.
For this essay, you will analyze how Art Spiegelman uses one or more of the rhetorical appeals and the metaphor of cats and mice in the graphic novel Maus.
NOTE: this is an analysis, not a summary of the text. Do not tell me what happened; discuss how the author used metaphor and rhetorical appeals to convey his message. Writing a summary rather than
an analysis will earn a grade of F.
