Essay Two: Analysis Essay
For this assignment, you will analyze a text of your choice, examine the rhetorical situation present in the text, then use your understanding of that situation to analyze the text. As we’ve discussed, each text has a purpose. Your task is to evaluate the strategies the author used to achieve their rhetorical purpose. As we will discuss in this unit, a number of factors shape and influence a text — from the author to the audience, purpose to set. Your task in this essay is to break down a text through critical reading strategies to identify the specific considerations shaping the text.
Then, within the context of these specific factors, analyze the choices the author made in crafting this text.
While reading, ask yourself: Why did the author write this particular text in this particular way? What specific strategies did they use in order to achieve that purpose? In what ways are they successful? In what ways are they less so?
Pick an essay that either we have read as a class or that you have found in your own research. For the purposes of this essay, imagine that you are the writer’s editor and the essay hasn’t been yet been published. Instead, the author has emailed this article to you for feedback.
Respond to them and do the following:
Describe what it is that you think they’re attempting to achieve with this piece of writing. be specific.
Identify strategies they’re using in service of their overall purpose.
Tell them which strategies you think are most effective — that is, the writing techniques that are helping them get at their overall purpose for writing this thing. Why are these effective? Be specific. Quote passages and reflect on them.
Tell them which strategies are less effective. Again, be specific. Quote passages. Offer suggestions for how they might improve this strategy.
Give an overall evaluation of the essay’s success.
