Create a mindmap on the basis of what you have read/thought of/researched.

Outline: Thesis+ Sub claims

Step 1: Do some reading, thinking, and research on your topic.

Step 2: Brainstorm. Create a mindmap on the basis of what you have read/thought of/researched. Narrow down the topic to a specific area of focus.

Step 3: Make an argument that is not too broad/narrow– in other words, create a thesis statement (1-3 lines) that (a) focuses on a specific aspect of the broad topic; (b) makes a clear argument; (c) can be broken up into 3 or 4 sub claims.

Step 4: Write down your working thesis statement.

Step 5: Now, write down the 3 or 4 possible sub-arguments/subclaims that add up to the main thesis statement (Sub claim 1+ Sub claim 2+ Sub claim 3 = Main thesis statement).

Optional step for paper outline: Feel free to make note of at least 2 or 3 examples/evidence you’d be adding to each of these sub-claims in your final essay.
