Create a five (or more) paragraph essay using primary sources from your Western Civilizations
textbook to make your argument. (No external research required!)
Discuss the short and long-term effects of Christianity in the Roman Empire. Make your own conclusion/thesis using the book, and with analysis from at least two primary sources. You may consider such topics as differences between traditional Roman religion and Christianity, the religious, military, social, and political impact of this new religion, the benefits and/or burdens of monotheism in the later Roman age, Christianity and the roman state, women in Christianity, Roman Christians, and the influx of barbarians, etc. You cannot write every single topic. Instead, find a coherent thesis for your analysis paper. You MUST integrate at least TWO primary sources in the Textbook This one primary source on the topic is from Chapter 5: The Civilization of Ancient Rome Polybius Describes Roman Worship of their Ancestors, by Polybius (page 153) There are four primary sources in Chapter 6: The Transformation of Rome The Prosecution of a Roman Citizen (From Acts of the Apostles in New Testament) by (same author of Luke’s Gospels), (page 186) The Development of an Imperial Policy toward Christians (From Pliny the Younger to Emperor Trajan, From Emperor Trajan to Pliny the Younger) (Page 188-9) A Senator Defends the Traditional Religion of Rome by Quintus Aurelius Symmachus, prefect of City of Rome, (page 200) The questions for analysis may give some possible approaches to the sources, though the thesis should be your own.
