As we have read through the history, we have witnessed art education, and its role in the schools, change dramatically. Movements such as art as design, self-expression, nationalism, decoration, beauty, change agent, art as a moral influence, and art and the elements of design appear and disappear. A large number of these movements are products of the culture and context in regards to philosophy, artistic movements, visual culture, economics, politics, etc. have contributed towards theories of how art should be taught.

Assuming that we live in a pluralistic art world, should we use all of these techniques, movements, theories, and justifications in our modern classrooms? Current artists, according to philosophers like Danto, advise contemporary artists to borrow or use styles/subjects, etc, from the past since the narrative of art has ended. Should a similar philosophy be adapted for art education? Although there are contradictions between educational theories, throughout history there are also contradictions between art movements and styles that artist use. Should we not be so liberated in the classroom? Explain.
