Enlightenment ideology penetrating Jewish thought Paragraph: The way I will approach this topic is by having a variety of sources addressing from different angles. The reason I want different angles to this question is due to the fact it will allow us to
see a fuller picture of just how it truly penetrated in Jewish thought, and the implications it
brought. Certain sources I use will demonstrate how enlightenment reached Jewish thinkers,
and the challenges it brought to them. Other sources will allow us to take a first-person point
of view of the vivid impact the enlightenment had on Certain Jewish thinkers. The more
angles we can see, the clearer we will understand just how this ideology entered the Jewish
mind. Outline: Intro- Will discuss all angles that will be addressed and the importance of
each one. Angles I will approach will be what situations allowed for modern thinking to
approach the Jewish people. -What thinkers started this and in what area? -What caused the
Jewish people to locate in this particular area -How did the authorities of the Jewish Faith
first react regarding this modernity -How and why did Mendelssohn become the prominent
figure in Jewish thought with modernity. First approach-Will approach first angle in seeing
the ways in which enlightenment approached the Jewish people. -What particular strife or
conflict allowed the Jewish people to be confronted with Modernity. -Theologically thinking,
is the Jewish world supposed to adapt to the modern culture it is surrounded by? And
according to what authority? Second approach-After dissecting how the enlightenment
arrived at the footstep of the Jewish people, I will approach the way in which they first
received it. -We will take a closer look at other issues going on at the time such as the issue
of the role of Rabbis. Influential leaders such as Abraham Geiger played a major factor in

this. -Other prominent thinkers views on Modernity will be elaborated on such as David Caro
and Ruben Gumpertz. Third approach- The Jewish response to the enlightenment by certain
key thinkers. -In what ways did the enlightenment impact their views? -What effect does this
have to their thinking of God and life? -What circumstances allowed Mendelssohn to be the
one to pave the way? -How much was Mendelssohn influenced by Modernity? Conclusion-
Will examine the overall impact and divisions that was brought onto the Judaism by the
enlightenment and examine the course that enlightenment has put in the road for Judaism. –
How much, (looking back to before the introduction of modernity), did modern thinking
shape the Jewish Faith. -Was modernity unavoidable to the Jewish faith? Was it bound to
happen regardless of where geographically settled in due time? -What are the different
perceptions about Mendelssohn according to various prominent Jewish thinkers and his
impact on the faith Bibliography: Meyer, Michael A. Response to Modernity A History of
the Reform Movement in Judaism. Wayne State University Press, 2014. This Citation will
provide me with the proper approach in understanding how enlightenment was first perceived
by the Jewish people. In addition to this, it will also enable me to see the initial reaction and
response Judaism took. And thus, witness the impact enlightenment had not only on the
religion of Judaism, but on many perceptions of the Jewish faith and life. Mendelssohn,
Moses, and Michah Gottlieb. Writings on Judaism, Christianity, and the Bible. Brandeis
University Press, 2011. This citation will enable me to witness firsthand the enlightenment
that took place on Jewish thinkers. Instead of reading about the effect's enlightenment had,
From the personal letters of a man who lived through it, we will be able to see the vivid
impact it had on his thought. From letters to other Jewish thinkers, and commentaries on
ancient biblical texts, we will be able to discern the shift in certain ideologies. We will also
discuss What Mendelssohn was trying to accomplish and see how Mendelssohn attempted to
unify modern thinking with Jewish living. Mendelssohn's view on authentic Judaism will
also be displayed allowing us to compare it to ancient Judaism. Mendelssohn understood the
difference between authentic Judaism and Ancient Judaism, his form of authentic signified in
how the Jewish life should be conducted in his present time. We will dissect how much of
modern thinking was to contribute to Mendelssohn's philosophy on Jewish Living and
thinking. Other 2 texts I plan on using: Sutcliffe, Adam. Judaism and Enlightenment.
