First, research the nutrition licensing laws for your state and share the results with your classmates.

List at least two different job titles/options you can search for using your Bachelor’s in Nutrition degree. Next, complete a job search for each of the two you chose and share the job title, description, and qualifications for each job. Finally, out of the two you have researched, which one do you feel you will be most qualified for and in which ways?

Good morning class,

In Florida, nutrition counseling can only be performed with a license or when exempt (Nutrition Advocacy, n.d.). Both licensures mentioned require a Master’s of Science, and the licenses named include RD and CNS (Nutrition Advocacy, n.d.). The only thing clear in Florida is licensure is a must and no job titles are listed by Florida Health that we qualify for with a BS in Nutrition.

However, through a LinkedIn search, I came across a Health and Nutrition Coach position which requires a Health Coach certification, a Registered Dietitian licensure is preferred, and a Bachelor’s Degree is required (LinkedIn, 2022). That is all included in the list fo requirements, but the job expectation list is exponential (LinkedIn, 2022). There is another position available which is Manager Food and Nutrition Services (LinkedIn, 2022). The qualifications include a Bachelor’s Degree in a related discipline, 5-7 years of management experience, and 7-10 years of experience in healthcare or hospitality (LinkedIn, 2022). This is the position I am more qualified for, as I have 15 years of experience in healthcare, 20 years of experience in hospitality, and coming soon, a Bachelor’s Degree in Nutrition. However, I have only 2 years of management experience. There are unfortunately not many options without a Master’s Degree in Florida, which is why I have already begun prerequisites to qualify for a DPD Master’s Program. Are there additional certifications any of you would suggest?

Sincerely,

Denise F.

Hello everyone,

In Georgia “Only a dietitian can be licensed to provide nutrition care including: assessment, goal setting, counseling, or advice. Individuals with a masters degree or higher in human nutrition, food and nutrition, dietetics, food systems management, or nutrition education, or who have a doctorate in nutritional biochemistry are exempt from the law and may provide nutrition services without a license.” (The American Nutrition Organization, n.d.) Most of the nutrition related jobs in Georgia require you to be a Registered Dietician or have a masters degree in nutrition.

One job I found was labeled as Dietitian/Nutritionist 1, providing MNT for high risk clients in the WIC program and providing in-service training to WIC staff and community. Minimum qualifications are a Bachelors in nutrition related field. Preferred qualifications include experience working in a WIC program, public health experience, registration as a Dietician and experience working with mothers who are breastfeeding.

The second job is Director of School Nutrition where you must have the knowledge of full cost accounting and school nutrition equipment, managerial ability to administer the districts procurement plan, fiscal program for the department. You must have a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent educational experience in nutrition related field.

Honestly most of the jobs require special certifications that require more schooling. I would choose to go the Registered Dietician or Sport Nutrition routes if possible. If I had to choose one of the 2 listed above it would have to be Director of School Nutrition. I do have managerial and budgeting experience but don’t think I would get the job due to the lack of my nutrition career field experience.

Long post… thanks for the read and good luck everyone!
