Assignment:

For this assignment, you will conduct research and write a comparison of 2 artworks. You have been given 12 pairs to choose from. The artworks are from the same time period but from different regions of the world.

Your paper should include the following components:

1. Introduction thesis statement

2. Brief history of each artwork you will be discussing (time/place/context in which the work was created; information on the artist, if known)

3. Formal (visual) analysis of each work of art using the elements and design principles we have learned in class describing what you see and what effect the visual elements create

4. Compare and contrast the works of art. What is similar and what is different?

5. Link the works of art to the time/place/context in which they were created. Why did each artist make the artistic choices they did? How do those choices reflect the culture in which each work was created?

6. To conclude the paper, you should say why you find the works significant and artistically appealing. What made you select those particular artworks? Why do you think they are important?
