Discuss briefly the processes of erosion and deposition that occur in meandering rivers?

Chapter 10 Google Earth Assignment Name:

Terrestrial Rivers

1. Locate Snake River in Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming. (You will need to search ‘Signal Mountain, WY’ if not using Google Earth Pro- desktop version). Locate Oxbow Bend, on the southeast side of the lake, where the river exits. Observe the feature in Google Earth:

Refer to section 10.5

a. This is a meandering river, explain the characteristic of a meandering river.

b. Discuss briefly the processes of erosion and deposition that occur in meandering rivers?

c. Observe Oxbow Bend closely in Google Earth, then look at Figure 10.22 in your text page 280, what step in the stream meander diagram most closely resembles Oxbow Bend.

d. What is the eventual fate of Oxbow Bend?

2. Locate Horseshoe Bend (near Page, AZ), which is part of the Colorado River east of the Grand Canyon. Refer to 10.3

a. The Colorado River is an exotic stream, what is an exotic stream?

b. Observe the erosion that has occurred at Horseshoe Bend, how is it similar or different from the erosion occurring at Oxbow Bend? (Hint: Think about the rock types and the time scales)

c. Examine the images or use the street view (orange guy), note the large terraces present here. Refer to Page 283 (top left)What is a Terrace and what does this suggest about the geologic history of this part of Arizona?

3. Locate the drainage pattern using the latitude/longitude 35° 8′ 9.74″N, 119° 40′ 29.25″W. (hint enter “35 8 9.74N, 119 40 29.25W”)Refer to 10.2

a. What is the large linear feature traveling NW to SE? Hint: you are located in Southern California. It may be helpful to turn on the photos to get a ground-level view- in the layers menu-bottom left)

b. What type of drainage pattern are you observing here? Make sure you are looking at drainage patterns, not landforms or elevation changes. Why? Refer to text page 273

4. Find the location where the Volga River enters the Caspian Sea in Astrakhan.Refer to section 10.6
a. What type of depositional feature is this and how does it form?

b. Find another example of this depositional feature. Write the location or Lat. and Long.
