First Civilizations

First Civilizations

After your reading and research, you should have a basic picture in
your mind of what it might have been like to live in those ancient
cultures.
To help clarify that picture, for this discussion, you have two
options: to role play and imagine what caused your people to settle and
create one of the first civilizations in Mesopotamia, Egypt, or the Greek
Islands, or to examine how the Greek mainland flourished as a result of
the Persian War.
Outcomes

  1. Identify the origins of humankind (A, B, D, E, G, K)
  2. Describe the discoveries of Mesopotamia and Egypt that led them to
    be the first urbanized civilizations. (A, B, C, D, E, F, G, K)
  3. Examine the semi-nomadic societies and the monotheistic religious
    traditions they established. (A, B, C, D, E, F, G, K)
  4. Identify the first Greek-speaking societies, their collapse, and the
    emergence of a more powerful civilization. (A, B, C, D, E, F, G, K)
  5. Examine how the Greek victory over Persia allowed for great
    political and cultural production. (A, B, C, D, E, F, G, K)
    Instructions
    By Thursday, June 10, select one (only one!) topic from the below
    and write a response to the prompt by the initial post due date.
     Option 1: Based on at least one secondary source (not your
    eText), imagine you resided in the Western ancient world up to
    approximately 500 BCE (Mesopotamia, Egypt, or the Greek-
    speaking areas of Minoa, or Mycenae). You can play the part of
    any fictional citizen, ruler, priest or other role. Whatever role you
    do assume, complete the following:
    o introduce yourself to your peers in a post that identifies you
    and your role (use actual terms from the period to make this
    come alive);
    o explain why your people created permanent settlements;

o describe your religious traditions and compare these to
other ancient civilizations described in this module;
o explain what you believe is the single (only one) greatest
cultural achievement or innovation you left for the future and
why.

 Option 2: Based on at least one primary and one secondary
source (not your eText) explain how the Persian War and the
Peloponnesian War transformed Athens. Were these
transformations beneficial or not, and why? Provide at least one
specific historical example.
Make sure you use evidence from the sources and source types noted
in your prompt to support your points. You may use sources other than
those found in the Module 1 Recommended Resources page, but you
should write at least 200 words in your response.
