Divine command theory
Divine Command Theory is based on the belief that morality is based on God’s specific commands to
specific people at specific times, rather than morality being based on universal moral values that apply
to all people at all times.
On September 11, 2001, Muslim extremists hijacked three airplanes and used them as weapons,
believing God had commanded them to do so. Soon after, President George W. Bush also invoked Divine
Command Theory in his response to the terrorist attacks. Earlier that same year, a woman named
Andrea Yates drowned her five children because “God commanded it.”
Assignment:
1) Write a 450-600-word essay in response to the following two questions
“How should we respond if someone, whether a terrorist or the president of the United States, justifies the morality of his actions based on a divine command?”
“What is the connection, if any, between morality and religion?”
2) Use reason and logic to formulate your answer. You may refer to your faith but do not rely solely on a
faith-based explanation as evidence for your argument.
