Considering methods suggested throughout the course, write a comparison-contrast essay that discusses a significant literary element present in Othello and common to one of the short stories listed on the course syllabus.

You may choose to write an essay that comments on the similarities and differences between:

two characters;
a common theme;
a common motif;
the works’ portrayals of gender norms;
or, how the settings relate to their respective narratives.
If you want to work on your own idea for a comparison-contrast topic, be sure to consult with me before you write on it.

Otherwise, students may freely write an essay in response to one of the sample topics provided.

In either case, be sure to indicate which topic you are writing about in your essay’s title (for example, “Villains: For Love or Money”).

Your essay should be 750 words in length (+/- 75 words).

You will be graded on the quality of your content, organization, style, and mechanics.

Be sure to include a clear and outlining thesis statement.

SAMPLE TOPICS:

Discuss the similarities and differences between the women in Othello and “The Story of an Hour” with regards to balancing duty and independence.
Compare and contrast how the theme of appearances is significant in both Othello and “Young Goodman Brown.”
Compare and contrast the effect the setting has on a narrative’s tone with reference to both Othello and “Hills Like White Elephants.”
