Instructions.: Choose one of the topics below and write a three to four page essay.
Make sure you address every point in the question and use textual evidence from
the literature to support your points as well as at least one quote from one of your
secondary sources. Also, in this essay it is possible to earn 3 bonus points for
incorporating some quotations from secondary sources, specifically from one of the
Kevin Powers interviews and from the Woods article on Moral Injury. You would
have to include these secondary sources on your works cited list as well. The
interviews and the article can be found under Content in the Module 3: The Novel
folder in Links to Interviews and Article.
Before planning and drafting your essay, refer to the reflective essay
instructions and grading criteria on pages 5-7 of our syllabus. Also remember
you may not write this essay as a text-submission (i.e. you may not type your
response into this box). You must type your essay as a Word document, use Save As,
browse your computer (below), and attach the document for submission.

ways in which Bartle tries to be good and ways in which he fails.
Choice 3: Bartle believes that cowardice is what motivated him to join the military;
he also believes it is what prevents him from becoming a man. Discuss several
instances in which Bartle is a coward, several instances in which he is brave, and
whether or not he has become a man.
Choice 4: Bartle, Sterling and Murphy are the three characters we get to know best
in the novel. Discuss the qualities of each character and how each character
responds to war in a distinctively different way.
