In Between the World and Me, Coates uses the idea of “the Dream” in several ways; for example, he refers to the American Dream and to Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech. But Coates does not usually discuss the notion of “the Dream” in positive terms. In at least the first half of your essay, analyze one idea of “the Dream” in Between the World and Me, paying close attention to the text and to the article and video matched with it on Canvas. Then, discuss how the American dream is experienced differently by people who have limited shares or participation in American opportunities. In the second half of your essay, you may compare the idea of the American dream to your own experience.
Primary vs. secondary texts: In this essay, Coates’s book will be our primary text—that is, it will be the subject of your analysis. The matching video texts on Canvas will be secondary—that is, they will assist you in your analysis of Coates by further explaining his ideas and by providing other views on the subject matter.
